Watch Muse kick off their otherworldly ‘Simulation Theory’ tour in Houston with LED-clad dancers, mad special effects and a giant robot skeleton

Muse kicked off their ‘Simulation Theory’ tour in Houston, Texas, last night (February 22nd) and the spectacular show featured everything from LED-clad dancers to a giant robot skeleton that dangled over the stage.

It’s the first on a giant run of shows for the band, who released their eight album, ‘Simulation Theory’, last year. The record scored the band their sixth number one album.

With a lengthy setlist, the band featured recent tracks ‘Propaganda’, ‘Pray’ and ‘Algorithm’, alongside old favourites including ‘Plug in Baby’, ‘Starlight’ and set closer ‘Knights of Cydonia’.

The band have been teasing fans with snippets of their transcendental set over the last few weeks. And speaking to NME about the shows last year, frontman Matt Bellamy promised the spectacular would “blow people’s minds.”

He said: “We’re going to do the biggest tour and just blow people’s minds with stuff they’ve never seen before. We’re going to come up with something that no one’s ever seen before.

“We’re always interested in the latest technology and what’s cutting edge, so we’re always thinking of the new thing that nobody’s ever used before in a concert. And we found something and we’re going to use that.”

When the tour was announced, the band offered packages that involved a “Mixed Reality Pre-Show Party” and virtual reality games.

The announcement read: “The ‘Simulation Theory’ World Tour will feature an exciting new Enhanced Experience Package that allows access to an exclusive Mixed Reality Pre-Show Party, powered by Microsoft, with three original virtual reality games, inspired by tracks from Simulation Theory. Additional Enhanced Experience perks include a premium concert ticket, show specific poster, interactive photo experience with props and memorabilia from the band’s latest videos and more.”

Muse are set to play three huge dates in the UK as part of the tour, with two dates in London and one in Manchester confirmed.

Produced by Rich Costey, Mike Elizondo, Shellback and Timbaland, ‘Simulation Theory’ was released last November.

In a four-star review, NME wrote: “With space-age rockabilly and EDM machine gun beats, this bizarre new album sees Muse retreat from the real world and into a ‘Tron’-style pastiche of their own adolescence. You’ll be ashamed to tell anyone how much you love it.”
