Alt-Right group claims responsibility for huge backlash against ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’

They're not happy with the "feminist agenda" or "Luke turning gay"

An alt-right group called ‘Down With Disney’s Treatment of Franchises‘ has claimed responsibility for the huge online backlash against Star Wars: The Last Jedi on Rotten Tomatoes.

The latest film in the sci-fi franchise  has already proven to be a box office smash, however while it’s been a huge critical success, it’s been noted that many fans passionately dislike the movie. At one stage, a petition was even started to have the whole film deleted and remade.

The Last Jedi racked up and impressive 92% critic rating on A CinemaScore, but just a 54% user score on Rotten Tomatoes from over 132,000 reviews. Now, the alt-right group ‘Down With Disney’s Treatment of Franchises‘ have claimed responsibility for this – claiming that they were unhappy with Disney’s apparent “feminist agenda”. They’re really not happy with Daisy Ridley playing the heroine of Rey.

Speaking to The Huffington Post, they claimed that claimed that Poe Dameron (played by Oscar Isaac) is a “victim of the anti-mansplaining movement,” that Poe and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) are in danger of being “turn[ed]” gay, and that men should be portrayed as ruler os “society”, not women.

“There were supposed to be a trilogy of books and then some after set in the Legends canon,” said a moderator for the group. “But [Lucasfilm executives] Kathleen Kennedy and Pablo Hidalgo wanted to pursue their own feminst [sic] agenda,” he wrote, adding later, “I was never going to like The Last Jedi anyway because [it] erases everything the EU [expanded universe] ever did.”

He added: “Regarding female heroes: Did you not see everything that came out of Ghostbusters? That is why. I’m sick and tired of men being portrayed as idiots. There was a time we ruled society and I want to see that again. That is why I voted for Donald Trump.”

A Rotten Tomatoes spokesman said that they were taking their attack “very seriously”, and had a team of “security, network, social, database experts who monitor all of our platforms and they haven’t seen any unusual activity.”

Responding to other criticism of the film, director Rian Johnson said: “I’m aware through my own experience that, first of all, the fans are so passionate, they care so deeply — sometimes they care very violently at me on Twitter.”

“But it’s because they care about these things, and it hurts when you’re expecting something specific and you don’t get it from something that you love. It always hurts, so I don’t take it personally if a fan reacts negatively and lashes out on me on Twitter. That’s fine. It’s my job to be there for that. Like you said, every fan has a list of stuff they want a Star Wars movie to be and they don’t want a Star Wars movie to be. You’re going to find very few fans out there whose lists line up.”
