Amazon shelves Woody Allen’s new film ‘A Rainy Day in New York’

The movie starred the likes of Timothée Chalamet, Selena Gomez and Jude Law

Woody Allen’s unreleased film A Rainy Day in New York has been indefinitely shelved by Amazon Studios, meaning that it’s likely that the movie will never be released.

The filmmaker’s latest project had already attracted criticism for its apparent depiction of an “inappropriate” relationship between Elle Fanning and Jude Law’s characters.

Despite the controversy, A Rainy Day in New York was expected to premiere later this year as part of Allen’s five-film deal with Amazon, which was signed in 2016. However, the studios have now decided to drop the film indefinitely, confirming today (August 30) that “no release date has ever been set”.

Reportedly costing the studios $25 million, the film may now never be released. Its cast also included Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez, who have both expressed their regret this year over working on the film. Chalamet pledged to donate his salary for the film to charity, with Gomez following suit.

It already looks like Allen won’t be releasing a new film in 2019, which would be the first time he has not released a movie for 44 years – or 43, if A Rainy Day in New York isn’t released.

Back in June, Allen voiced his support for the #MeToo movement in an interview, remarking “I should be the poster boy for the #MeToo movement.”
