Idris Elba's detective will return to BBC One on December 15

BBC One has released a tense trailer for Luther‘s upcoming two-part special.

“Are you scared of me?” asks Idris Elba’s John Luther in the minute-long teaser for the show’s first new episodes since 2013. “You should be.”

Part one of Luther‘s two-part special will air on BBC One at 9pm on December 15. Elba’s co-stars include Game Of Thrones actors Rose Leslie and Patrick Malahide, Fortitude‘s Darren Boyd, The Inbetweeners Movie actress Laura Haddock and Ripper Street‘s John Heffernan.

Meanwhile, Michael Smiley and Dermot Crowley have reprised their roles as Benny Silver and DSU Martin Schenk, though Ruth Wilson is not expected to return as Alice Morgan.

Elba said of the new episodes earlier this year: “It’s great we’ve been able to do this Luther special. John is so close to my heart, he’s part of me. The fans won’t be disappointed with his return – it’s explosive and definitely goes up a gear!”

Created and written by Neil Cross, Luther began on BBC One in 2010 and the third and most recent series aired in 2013. The show has also been a hit in the US, with Elba winning a Golden Globe in 2012 for his performance in the title role.

A US remake of Luther has been in the works since November 2014 though Elba won’t be reprising his role for the American version. In March it was revealed that the remake has been delayed while producers continue to search for a lead actor.
