‘Bird Box’ had the best first week of any Netflix original movie, ever

Millions of people watched across the world

Netflix has revealed that Bird Box is their most streamed original movie during the film’s first week.

Released on December 21, the apocalyptic thriller stars Sandra Bullock and Sarah Paulson as sisters Malorie and Jessica.

It follows Bullock as she navigates the world after an ominous unseen presence drives most of society to suicide. This other-worldly entity shows the victim’s their worst fears and drives them to the point of insanity. In order to survive, people must wear blindfolds so the “creatures” are unable to possess them.

The film has proved to be the streaming giant’s best opening week for an original film, with 45,037,125 accounts watching it over the past seven days.

“Took off my blindfold this morning to discover that 45,037,125 Netflix accounts have already watched Bird Box — best first 7 days ever for a Netflix film!” they wrote in a tweet.

Earlier this month, Netflix revealed its most re-watched original movies and binged TV shows for 2018. The three films that were the most re-watched originals between January 1 2018 and November 28 2018 were teen rom-coms The Kissing Booth and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before together with Roxanne Roxanne, the emotive biopic about rapper Roxanne Shanté.

According to Netflix, almost 50% of viewers who watched Kissing Booth and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before rewatched them at least once. Netflix, who keep viewing figures under wraps, did not reveal how many people watched the films saying that the ranking bore “no relation to overall viewing.”
