Black Rebel Motorcycle Club reveal Pink Floyd and Spiritualized influence on new album

The group's currently untitled seventh LP is due out in March

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club have said that both Pink Floyd and Spiritualized have been an influence on their forthcoming seventh album.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Robert Levon Been of the band said:

“We always were fans of Pink Floyd and Spiritualized records. As far as real albums where we wanted to attempt to take people on a ride and have songs crossfade and reach over and different tricks we’d always wanted to do, it was kind of fun to get to play around with that.”

Been also discussed the tragedy surrounding the making of the record – the death of his father and mentor and soundman to the band, Michael Been, in 2010. Robert Been said he wasn’t sure how the group would carry on after his father passed away whilst on the road with the group.

He said: “It terrified us that we were robbed of the very thing that we could always call on.”

Drummer Leah Shapiro explained that because of this, it took a while for the band to get around to recording the follow-up to 2010’s ‘Beat The Devil’s Tattoo’.

She said: “The writing of it has been a really long process. We were in the rehearsal studio for like a year before I even laid down the first batch of drum tracks.”

“That was why this record took so long,” said Been about his father’s death. “No one really wanted to find those words or dig in deep. So we were faking it for a while, not really digging that deep. You have to go back again and dig a bit deeper, and it was excruciating.”

The album will feature the songs ‘Rival’, ‘Teenage Disease’, ‘Lullaby’ and ‘Returning’.
