Britain’s favourite Christmas film has been revealed – and a classic offering has triumphed after winning over fans for more than 70 years.
It’s A Wonderful Life knocked Elf into second spot in the new survey of 7000 people, which was conducted by the Radio Times.
The rest of the top five was made up of festive staples including Love Actually, Home Alone and The Muppets Christmas Carol.
The 1946 classic stars James Stewart as George Bailey, who has devoted his life to helping others in the small town of Bedford Falls.
But when George he considers taking his own life on Christmas Eve, a guardian angel steps in to show him all the lives that he has changed – and the huge impact his death would have on them.
The festive classic was directed by Frank Capra and scored five Oscar nominations upon release, including a Best Picture nod.

The presence of Die Hard will no doubt prove contentious for some – as huge debate remains over whether it’s actually a Christmas film. Last night, 20th Century Fox even released a festive trailer for the classic action film, which seemingly suggests that it’s definitely a staple of the holiday season.
