To celebrate ‘Mario Day’, Google Maps now has its own Mario Kart

Navigate the roads this week as Nintendo's star mascot.

To celebrate ‘Mario Day’ (March 10), Google Maps have released a week-long feature that allows users to navigate as Mario in Mario Kart.

Announced by Nintendo of America, the feature works once you input a destination and choose your vehicle as a car. By the ‘start navigation’ button you’ll find a question mark box as made famous by Mario’s games.

The popular racing game series debuted in 1992 with the SNES game Super Mario Kart. The likes of Mario Kart 64Mario Kart: Super Circuit and Mario Kart Wii have since followed across Nintendo’s multiple consoles, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe the latest release in the long-running franchise.

Recently, it was announced that a new edition of the franchise will be released on mobile. It will be available to play on smartphones within the next year. The game, titled Mario Kart Tour, is currently slated for release in “the fiscal year ending in March 2019”.

The game is set to be made available on both iOS and Android-enabled smartphones. Mario Kart Tour follows in the footsteps of the recent Nintendo mobile game Super Mario Run, which came out back in December 2016.

Nintendo have also announced that Mario will soon be the subject of a new film. The titular character will be brought to life in the new movie by Illumination studios, who were behind the Despicable Me and Minions films.
