City of Lies: Watch the first trailer for Johnny Depp’s Biggie and Tupac drama

This looks promising...

The first trailer has arrived for Johnny Depp and Forest Whitaker’s new drama about the murders of Biggie and Tupac – and it’s a dark dive into one of music’s biggest tragedies.

City Of Lies traces the story of a hard-nosed journalist (Whitaker) who seeks the help of a former LAPD detective (Depp) as he seeks to discover why the case into Biggie and Tupac’s deaths is still open.

Although largely based on on the deaths of the rap titans in 1997, the film will also reportedly shine a light on police corruption at the time within Los Angeles.

Directed by The Infiltrator‘s Brad Furman, the film occurs some two decades after the 1997 murder of Biggie Smalls and is based on journalist Randall Sullivan’s book of the same name.

It’s reportedly set for release on September 7.

Earlier this year, the unlikeliest of comparisons came when Top Dawg Entertainment president Punch compared the talents of Tupac to those of Cardi B.

“Pac wasn’t as skilled technically as some of his iconic counterparts, like a JAY-Z or Nas or B.I.G.,” he wrote in an op-ed for DJ Booth.
“And yet, he’s still viewed by many as the greatest rapper of all time. Why is that? The answer: a combination of passion, content, delivery, and HONESTY.”
