Get ready for 'American Utopia'
Details of a new solo album from David Byrne appear to have leaked online.
Fans on the Reddit forum r/indieheads noticed the new page appear on Amazon, showing pre-orders for an album by the Talking Heads legend called ‘American Utopia’ – which is due for release on March 9 via the label Nonesuch. This would be his first record since 2012’s ‘Love This Giant’, a collaboration with St Vincent.
This comes after Byrne has announced a series of world tour dates for 2018 – including INmusic, Bilbao BBK and Roskilde Festival. He has described these shows as his ‘most ambitious’ since the seminal ‘Stop Making Sense‘ tour.
“With everyone mobile, I realized the stage could be completely clear,” he said of the new live set up. “If we could have the monitors in our ears, the amps off-stage and the lights up high, then we had the possibility of a completely empty space,” he told Brooklyn Vegan.
He then revealed the difficulty in hiding the “people and gear” around the stage, initially considering drapes before settling on lightweight chains.
“It takes color beautifully. Not only does it take color, one can cast shadows on the chain,” he said.
Byrne has also changed his Facebook profile picture to what appears to be new album artwork, and has started posting images to Instagram.
“Hello, I’m David Byrne, and I’ll be posting some images here,” he posted. “Recently I have been noting, for my own sanity, examples of encouraging and hopeful things that are going on in the world. I have called this collection Reasons To Be Cheerful, after the song by the late great Ian Dury. This is a church in Brooklyn….the sentiment, it seems to me, implies not so much a dogmatic religious view as an open and beautiful way of encountering the world. The world as a poem. This group may be Christian, but I can see the rubric having broader application….it’s useful no matter what your religious or spiritual orientation…or even if you have none at all.”
Earlier this year, Byrne responded to Selena Gomez sampling the Talking Heads classic ‘Psycho Killer’ on her huge single ‘Bad Liar’.
“I really like the song… and her performance too,” he said.
Bassist Weymouth, meanwhile, has said: “It’s good to be appreciated”.
