‘Deadpool 2’ director David Leitch reveals original plans for Vanessa

Spoiler alert for those who haven't watched it yet...

The director of Deadpool 2 has spoken about how the original plot did not include Vanessa’s death.

David Leitch reveals in the audio commentary that accompanies the film’s digital release that Vanessa, who is protagonist Wade Wilson’s other half, was going to follow a number of different paths.

“We had versions where they broke up and she left him – instead of dying,” he said.

But that the decision to kill Vanessa off was taken in order to enrich the plot.

Deadpool 2’s leading actor and co-writer Ryan Reynolds explains that the “character’s so outrageous and so obnoxious and so crazy that if he had everything, everything was in a good place in his life, you can’t really turn up the fun.”

“The more pain Deadpool’s in, the funnier Deadpool can be, or the more ridiculous Deadpool can be, or outlandish, he said.

“So we really only had the one thing to take, and that was Vanessa. It was something we agonised over forever.”

As well as Vanessa’s death, the film also kills off Cable’s (Josh Brolin) wife and child too, which sets him up and Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) on their journeys.

The film’s co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick had also discussed the break-up option but it was scrapped after someone pointed out that Deadpool works better when he has everything taken away from him.

Wernick said, “I know it wasn’t consciously sexist. It may appear that way as the film progresses and Cable loses his family as well, but again, the desire was to give a motivation… and have it be a parallel motivation that they both lost their family, and they’re both trying to kind of find their way in the world without them.”

Deadpool 2 is available to buy on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K on September 17 in the UK.
