Deadpool 2 has been praised for being the first Marvel film to feature a same-sex couple onscreen.
The superhero sequel, released yesterday (May 18), features a lesbian romance between characters Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) and Yukio (Shioli Kutsuna).
In a recent interview, director David Leitch said that he wanted to “reflect real life” with the Ryan Reynolds-starring film.
“[It wasn’t] a statement we were trying to make,” he told Yahoo. “I never really thought of it that way.”

He continued: “It just felt natural to the material. I’m glad that it is [breaking ground]. I think that I’m really glad that it doesn’t feel like it’s groundbreaking.
“Maybe we’ve come to a place in society where that just feels natural.”
The move has been praised by GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), with CEO and president Sarah Kate Ellis saying in a statement: “20th Century Fox and Marvel have finally given countless moviegoers around the world what they’ve longed to see – LGBTQ superheroes in a relationship who protect the world together.
“Negasonic and Yukio’s storyline is a milestone in a genre that too often renders LGBTQ people invisible, and should send a message to other studios to follow this example of inclusive and smart storytelling.”
“It’s an odd thing to say, but I don’t think there will be a Deadpool 3,” he said. “I think going forward, it would be an X-Force movie, which would be his team, so to speak.”
Meanwhile, a huge Deadpool 2 cameo has been confirmed by the writers.
