Diane Lane signs on for ‘Superman’

Actress will play Martha Kent in the reboot

The Superman reboot is taking shape, with Diane Lane being cast as the hero’s adoptive mother.

The Hollywoodland actress has signed on for the role of Martha Kent, playing opposite Henry Cavill as the Man Of Steel in the Zack Snyder-directed movie.

Kent became a key character in the superhero’s origin story, after she and husband Jonathan discovered the rocket carrying the infant Kal-El, and renamed him Clark Kent.

Snyder said of the casting, according to Variety: “This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”

There has not yet been an announcement about the identity of the main female lead, other than that it is not likely to be the Lois Lane character. The new Superman movie is due for release in summer 2012.
