Chris Pratt responds to Ellen Page’s claims of him supporting “notoriously anti-LGBTQ” church

"No church defines me or my life"

Chris Pratt has responded to Ellen Page after she hit out at him for supporting an “infamously anti-LGBTQ” church.

The Guardians of The Galaxy star has previously voiced his support for Hillsong – the global church group favoured by famous faces including Justin Bieber.

But the Juno actress then called on Pratt to address Hillsong’s views towards LGBTQ people, after Chris discussed his his ‘spiritual side’ on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

After seeing a tweet from The Hollywood reporter that mentioned the said “spiritual side”, Page replied: “Oh. K. Um. But his church is infamously anti lgbtq so maybe address that too?”

The Oscar nominated star is openly gay, having celebrated her anniversary to wife Emma Portner just last month.

Responding on an Instagram Story yesterday, Pratt said that Page’s claims could not be “further from the truth.”

“I go to a church that opens their doors to absolutely everyone,” he wrote, stating that “no church defines me or my life, and I am not a spokesman for any church or any group of people.”

He added: “My values define who I am. We need less hate in this world, not more. I am a man who believes that everyone is entitled to love who they want, free from the judgment of their fellow man.”

It comes after Hillsong leader Brian Houston said that gay people were welcome to worship at the church, but Hillsong does not “affirm” their lifestyle.

“Hillsong Church welcomes ALL people but does not affirm all lifestyles. Put clearly, we do not affirm a gay lifestyle and because of this we do not knowingly have actively gay people in positions of leadership, either paid or unpaid,” said Houston in 2015.

“So if you are gay, are you welcome at Hillsong Church? Of course! You are welcome to attend, worship with us, and participate as a congregation member with the assurance that you are personally included and accepted within our community. But (this is where it gets vexing), can you take an active leadership role? No.”

He added: “This won’t make everyone happy and to some, this stance may even be seen as hypocritical. We are a gay welcoming church but we are not a church that affirms a gay lifestyle.”

Houston also previously said that the church’s attitude to gay marriage is “consistent” with scripture.

As he appeared on Colbert, Pratt said of his spirituality: “Sometimes just having a self to share is what kills you, because there’s nothing left. So you have to have a light to share. A light that’s just a bright as any of these lights.”

Meanwhile, Pratt stars in the Lego Movie 2 – which is out now.
