‘Fantastic Beasts 3’ confirms Johnny Depp will return as Grindelwald

News of his casting comes a week after he again denied abusing his ex-wife

Johnny Depp has been confirmed for the third instalment of the Fantastic Beasts film.

Depp, who plays the antagonist wizard Gellert Grindelwald, revealed that he will begin production for Fantastic Beasts 3 in “the middle of next year”.

Speaking to Collider about possible future storylines for his character, the actor added: “The possibilities in that world are wide open, so you can really try anything. So it was a gas and I look forward to the next instalment.”

Depp made headlines last week for reviving his denial against claims that he physically abused his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard.

In the GQ interview that prompted Heard’s legal team to condemn his latest comments, Depp said: “To harm someone you love? As a kind of bully? No, it didn’t, it couldn’t even sound like me.”

In light of the allegations, the decision to keep Depp in the Fantastic Beasts movies has continued to divide opinion.

JK Rowling, who writes and produces the Harry Potter spin-offs, said in a statement last year that she is “genuinely happy” to have Depp involved.

“Based on our understanding of the circumstances, the filmmakers and I are not only comfortable sticking with our original casting, but genuinely happy to have Johnny playing a major character in the movies,” the writer told fans.

“I accept that there will be those who are not satisfied with our choice of actor in the title role. However, conscience isn’t governable by committee. Within the fictional world and outside it, we all have to do what we believe to be the right thing.”
