Game Of Thrones director Alan Taylor shot the sequel to 2011’s Thor, which was directed by Kenneth Branagh, late last year in England and Iceland. Alongside Hemsworth and Hiddleston, original cast members Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba, Stellan Skarsgård and Rene Russo have all reprised their roles from the first Thor film, which grossed a shade under $450 million (£290 million) at cinemas worldwide.
Meanwhile, former Doctor Who star Christopher Eccleston has joined the cast and plays a supervillain called Malekith the Accursed. According to Marvel’s official synopsis for the film, “a vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness” and it falls on Hemsworth’s hammer-wielding hero to stop him.
Thor: The Dark World opens in UK cinemas on October 30 before getting a US release on November 8.
