Raphael Schumacher, 27, was rushed to hospital in Pisa, Italy
An Italian actor is currently in a coma after a hanging scene during a theatre production went wrong, reports state.
Raphael Schumacher, 27, was appearing in a production of a play called Mirages at the Teatro Lux in Pisa, a city in the Italian region of Tuscany.
BBC News reports that Schumacher was rushed to hospital after an audience member realised something was wrong. He is currently in a coma.
The local Il Giorno newspaper suggests that adequate safety procedures were not in place at the production.
Another actor in the play told the press of the incident, as reported by The Independent: “The noose should have been fake and a harness should have caught him if he fell. I cannot explain how an incident like this happened.”
Following the incident, there had been speculation that Schumacher intentionally attempted to take his own life. The actor’s mother has denied these claims, saying: “My son recently lost his father and had ended a relationship but had found his serenity again”.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
