Adam Sandler has addressed previous comments he made about how his new film Uncut Gems might fare in the 2020 awards season.
The actor, who portrays charismatic jeweller Howard Ratner in Josh and Benny Safdie’s forthcoming adrenaline-filled thriller, said last month that if he, hypothetically, doesn’t win an Oscar for his role then he’ll do another movie that is “so bad, on purpose”. The full list of nominations for the 2020 Academy Awards is revealed on January 13.
In a video interview with NME, Sandler said that he was “joking” when he made the comments on The Howard Stern Show in December. “No I’m not going to do [a bad movie], I was just joking,” explained Sandler to NME’s Kevin EG Perry and his co-star, Idina Menzel.
Menzel said that Sandler “couldn’t make a crappy movie” anyway, to which Sandler added: “I don’t have that in me, that’s right.”
Elsewhere in the interview Sandler and Menzel spoke about “sweet” and “humble” The Weeknd, who stars alongside them in Uncut Gems in a minor, though pivotal role.
“I love his music. My kids love his music,” said Sandler, before going on to talk about a fist fight that his character Ratner has with the fictionalised version of the pop star in the film.
“You know, I didn’t get any punches in there with The Weeknd but I did roll around on the ground. He spit on me – I didn’t like that – he spit some gum on me. It was written [in the script] but I didn’t think he was going to do it,” Sandler recalled.
Uncut Gems is out now in the US and is released in UK cinemas this Friday, 10 January. It arrives on Netflix worldwide, excluding the US, on January 31.
