‘Aquaman 2’ has an official release date

First film went on to become the highest-grossing DC movie of all time

A release date has been set for Aquaman 2, it has been announced.

Warner Bros confirmed the release date for the sequel to last year’s DC movie, which starred Jason Momoa in the lead role.

Aquaman 2 will be in cinemas on December 16, 2022. It is not currently clear whether the release date is a worldwide or US only release date.

Momoa is also expected to return in the title role for Aquaman 2. Details of the cast have yet to be confirmed.

It was confirmed that the superhero movie would be getting a sequel earlier this month after the original film went on to become the highest-grossing DC movie of all time. Rumours of a sequel began circulating before the original film even came out.

The original film’s co-writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick has been hired to begin work on the follow-up while James Wan and Peter Safran are currently in talks to return as producers. However, it’s unclear whether Wan would return to direct the sequel.

Last month, Wan responded after Aquaman was snubbed at the Oscars after the superhero epic failed to secure a nod in the VFX nominations.

The DC Comics movie was left in the cold when the special effects category was announced, alongside the separate nominations for Best Documentary Feature and Best Original Score.

Wan posted a message on his Facebook page that toasted the success of the film – before he received a congratulatory response from visual effects supervisor Kelvin McIlwain.

Wan wrote in response: “Kelvin, you and your department are the unsung heroes of this film. The fact that your VFX peers in the Academy aren’t recognising or appreciating what we/you’ve all contributed to the film and cinema is a f****ing disgrace.
