‘Arrested Development’ star Will Arnett joins Megan Fox in new ‘Ninja Turtles’ movie

His role is being kept secret, but he could be playing either Shredder or Splinter in the reboot

Arrested Development star Will Arnett has joined the cast of the new Ninja Turtles movie.

Arnett’s role in the reboot is being kept secret, The Hollywood Reporter notes, but he could be playing either the turtles’ rat guru Splinter or the villainous Shredder, as those parts have yet to be cast.

Megan Fox signed on to play the turtles’ friend April O’Neil in February (2013) and since then a quartet of up-and-coming actors – Alan Ritchson, Pete Ploszek, Jeremy Howard and Noel Fisher – have been cast as the turtles themselves. The reboot has been scheduled for release on June 6, 2014.

Filming is due to begin later this month in New York, with Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles) directing and Michael Bay serving as a producer. The project has already attracted its fair share of controversy. Last March (2012), when Bay revealed plans to re-imagine the turtles as aliens, he was accused of “sodomising” the original films by Robbie Rist, the actor who voiced Michaelangelo. Bay later spoke out to reassure fans.

Then in September (2012), a leaked script began circulating online and got savaged by Peter Laird, co-creator of the original TMNT comic books. Bay stepped in again, writing on his website: “The leaked script for Ninja Turtles that different sites continue to comment on was written well before I… was involved with the project. That script saw the shredder a long time ago.”

Meanwhile, Will Arnett will reprise his role as Gob Bluth in 14 new episodes of Arrested Development, which are set to arrive simultaneously on Netflix next month (May). His original co-stars Jason Bateman, Michael Cera and Portia de Rossi have all returned too and confirmed guest stars include Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Seth Rogen and Liza Minnelli.
