Baz Luhrmann’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ gets new release date

The lavish adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan will hit cinemas in May 2013

Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby has been given a new release date.

Originally, the director’s lavish adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald‘s classic novel was due to hit cinemas on Christmas Day this year (2012). However, Warner Bros made a decision last month (August 2012) to postpone its release until the following summer “to ensure this unique film reaches the largest audience possible”.

In a press release, Warner Bros have now announced that The Great Gatsby will open in the US and Canada on May 10 2013, before beginning an “international rollout” the following week. The film’s specific UK release date has yet to be confirmed.

Explaining the decision to schedule The Great Gatsby for May 2013, Warner Bros representative Dan Fellman said: “Audiences have been looking forward to Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of one of the most beloved books of all time, and we felt this beautifully extravagant and dramatic film would be a perfect way for us to kick off our summer slate.”

Shot in 3D, The Great Gatsby stars Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role alongside Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan and Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway. Luhrmann made the movie in his native Australia, though the action is set in New York and Long Island’s North Shore during the summer of 1922.
