Behind-the-scenes photos from Star Wars Episode VIII shared by director Rian Johnson

A glimpse into the galaxy of episode eight

Photos from the set of Star Wars Episode VIII have been shared by its director Rian Johnson. Set to be released in 2017, Johnson took to his tumblr account to share the images.

Marking the half-way point in filming, the photos feature an X-Wing cockpit and a computer system. Writing on tumblr, Johnson said, “I can’t believe we’re halfway through the shoot. (We’re halfway through the shoot!)”

The storyline and title for Star Wars Episode VIII are being kept firmly under wraps until its release on Dec 15 2017.

Last month, Daisy Ridley spoke to Entertainment Tonight about the next Star Wars film, revealing further details about the current filming process and working with new director Rian Johnson.

Ridley said of the atmosphere on set with new director Rian Johnson, “It’s still the same. It’s very lovely and warm and friendly still”.

She then goes on “Obviously it went really well with VII, but it’s wonderful to give people a little bit. I think we did do that for VII, just a little bit to keep the interest peaked [sic].”

Oscar Isacc, who plays Poe Dameron, also told The LA Times: “Rian is definitely going to places and investigating things that haven’t really been done in the Star Wars universe. For me, it’s so fun getting to explore different things that I wouldn’t have expected in this universe. In some ways it feels like we’re making an independent film. Certain things we get to play with – this kind of intimacy that we get to find – it’s special. It’s been really fun.”
