Benedict Cumberbatch rumoured for role in new ‘Star Wars’ movie

Report claims Cumberbatch is to re-team with director JJ Abrams on 'Star Wars: Episode VII'

Benedict Cumberbatch has landed a role in Star Wars: Episode VII, according to new reports.

Star Wars fans are apparently expecting a major announcement regarding the movie and according to Film Chronicles it will be Cumberbatch who is unveiled as a new cast member.

However, the report offers no suggestion as to what role Cumberbatch might be playing in the film, which is due to start shooting in the UK early next year (2014). The Sherlock actor has recently dropped out of Crimson Peak, a forthcoming horror film from director Guillermo Del Toro that is scheduled to begin filming around the same time.

Speculation is also being fuelled by several recent interviews in which Cumberbatch has spoken about being a Star Wars fan since childhood. On top of this, Cumberbatch worked with JJ Abrams, director of Episode VII, on this year’s Star Trek Into Darkness, in which he played the villain.

Meanwhile, Ryan Gosling and Zac Efron were both linked to the film in July and original Star Wars cast members Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill have all hinted very strongly that they will be returning. Lucasfilm – which is now owned by Disney – has slated Star Wars: Episode VII for release in 2015 and hired Toy Story 3 writer Michael Arndt to pen the script.
