Black Panther director Ryan Coogler has revealed the one scene he was forced to cut from his Marvel Comics epic.
Coogler, who has received rave reviews for his work on the superhero epic, explained how he had originally envisaged a scene that would see T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) going for a jog through their home kingdom of Wakanda.
But while Coogler believed that the scene would provide viewers with the perfect introduction to the kingdom, the idea failed to make it past an early script after it was deemed too costly.
“I was so in love with Wakanda, I wanted to explore it more,” he told Digital Spy.
“There was a scene in the script early days that we had to cut for the sake of affordability where T’Challa and Nakia run through Wakanda – they take a jog.
“And it was kinda, think of it as a Rocky-style jog or a Muhammad Ali When We Were Kings-style jog where we saw all of Wakanda and you jog back to Nakia’s home and you meet her parents.
“But it was a scene that you couldn’t afford to do and we had to lose it. Now looking at the film, we wouldn’t have had time. We would have shot it and had to cut it out anyway.”
Although the scene failed to make the cut, it hasn’t stopped Black Panther from becoming one of Marvel’s most critically acclaimed offerings to date.
NME’s official verdict stated: “After a wait of far too long, it needed to make its moment count, to be a beginning and not an ending. It’s not just good. It’s the best Marvel movie yet.”
