Producer Frank Marshall has shared the first photo from the set of Bourne 5.
The sequel, currently untitled, started shooting yesterday in Greece. “First day of principal photography complete and happy to report, BOURNE is back!” Marshall tweeted alongside a photo of Matt Damon.
Bourne 5 marks the return of Damon’s Jason Bourne after nearly a decade away from the screen. The actor last played the secret agent in 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum and sat out 2012’s Bourne Legacy, which instead starred Jeremy Renner and performed relatively poorly at the box office.
Director Paul Greengrass, who was behind the camera for the second and third Bourne films, has also returned for the fifth instalment. For the first time, Greengrass and Damon have written the screenplay themselves, alongside Christopher Rouse, who served as editor on the second and third Bourne films.
The film’s supporting cast includes Julia Stiles, who has signed up to reprise her role as agent Nicky Parsons, and Ex Machina actress Alicia Vikander, who has been cast in an unknown role. Meanwhile, Tommy Lee Jones has signed up to appear in an unknown supporting role and Black Swan‘s Vincent Cassel has been cast as an assassin tracking Bourne.
Damon recently said of the film: “Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world.”
Bourne 5 is set for release on July 29, 2016.
