Cooper says he wanted his character to play the guitar like Neil Young
Bradley Cooper has opened up about becoming his character Jackson Maine in his forthcoming movie A Star is Born.
In this exclusive clip, Cooper is seen discussing his role with Lady Gaga – who plays ‘Ally’ in the film – Mark Ronson and collaborator Lukas Nelson of Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, who appear as Jackson’s band.
Cooper had to learn how to sing and play the guitar for the role, while also writing his own original music for the film. In the clip, he explains how it took him months of working with a vocal coach to perfect his voice.
He also opens up about how he wanted Jackson’s guitar to sound, citing Neil Young as his inspiration. “His guitar strumming never floated around the neck, it attacked the neck,” Cooper said.
The actor continued to explain how he would work in prep until 2am and would then head into the studio to record his songs until 4am. The song which opens the film – ‘Black Eyes’ – was written while they were filming.
“I will never forget you coming in and going ‘I know what the beginning of the movie is'” Lady Gaga remarks.
In the film, Maine is a country music star whose fame is starting to dwindle. One night, in a bar, he spots Ally (played by Lady Gaga). Ally has an incredible voice but sings covers of other people’s songs because she’s too scared to sing her own.
The film marks Gaga’s leading debut, while A Star Is Born is Cooper’s first film as director.
A Star Is Born is in UK cinemas on 3rd October. Ahead of the movie’s release, Warner Bros will be hosting free preview screenings across the country on 1st October.
