Chris Pine has shed light on Star Trek 2 in a new interview.
The sci-fi sequel is scheduled for release next May (2013), but currently has no title. Pine will return as Captain Kirk, while Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg and Zoe Saldana will all reprise their roles from 2009’s Star Trek.
Plot details are being kept closely under wraps, but Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch is known to be playing the villain. The sequel is being helmed by JJ Abrams, who also directed the 2009 reboot.
When asked whether the second film will be darker than the original, Pine told Total Film: “We’re not making Batman. That’s not our deal.”
Discussing the tone of the new movie, Pine said: “There’s comedy, which I think JJ does a great job of, but, like the first one, there’s some serious issues being dealt with. And I’d say the threat is even greater in this one.”
Pine also promised that fans of the first film will not experience déjà vu while watching the sequel. He added: “The force [the Enterprise crew] are met with is much more frightening. It’s relentlessly action-packed and in terms of character development it goes places you’d never expect. The arc is huge for all the characters. It’s a really big story – I can’t hype it enough!”
