Christian Bale was nearly cast in new role for ‘Batman Vs Superman’

Bale played Batman in three Christoper Nolan films

Zack Snyder has revealed that he considered casting Christian Bale in Batman Vs Superman, but not as Bruce Wayne.

Bale played Batman in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy of films between 2005-2012 and recently admitted that he felt he did not do the role justice. However, Ben Affleck has taken on the role for the new “mash-up” superhero title and will star opposite Henry Cavill as Superman.

Speaking with Australian film website, FilmInk, the director admitted that he considered casting Bale in a non-Dark Knight role.

“This is a total and opposite reality from the Chris Nolan movies. It’s another universe, so we couldn’t hire Christian Bale if we wanted to, because he doesn’t exist in our world,” he said. “Maybe we could hire him to play another part. We did talk about that briefly. I just wanted to hire Christian to play another part to make that obvious.”

Snyder added: “Christian could play, like, Alfred with age makeup. No! Of course not. But you know what I mean. Even people at the studio would say, ‘Who are you getting from the other movies?’ And I was like, ‘Hey, come on guys, let’s all understand, it’s a different world.’ In the Batman universe that Chris Nolan created, Superman would have a hard time existing. That that’s why we did a reboot on the universe, so we could allow these characters to exist together. We needed to do that to have Batman exist in this world.”

Batman Vs Superman is set to open in cinemas worldwide on March 25. The film also stars Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Holly Hunter as a US Senator, Jeremy Irons as Bruce Wayne’s butler Alfred, Laurence Fishburne as newspaper editor Perry White and Diane Lane as Superman’s adoptive mother Martha Kent.

Henry Cavill recently confirmed that the film isn’t conceived as a sequel to 2013’s Superman reboot Man Of Steel, but is “more of an introduction to Batman, an opening to Justice League, and an expansion of the world that was created in Man of Steel“.

Meanwhile, it has recently been reported that Affleck is to direct, co-write and star in a stand-alone Batman film set for release at some point in 2018.
