Confirmed: Mel Gibson to play villain in ‘The Expendables 3’

Antonio Banderas has also signed up for Sly Stallone's golden oldies sequel

Mel Gibson will play the main villain in The Expendables 3.

Gibson was reported to be “in talks” for the role in June (2013), but he’s now fully on board, Entertainment Weekly has confirmed.

Antonio Banderas has also signed up for Sly Stallone’s golden oldies sequel, though his role has yet to be revealed. They join a confirmed cast that includes Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham and Harrison Ford, who enlisted last week at the same time Bruce Willis dropped out, reportedly over a salary dispute.

Jackie Chan, Wesley Snipes, Nicolas Cage and Milla Jovovich have also been linked to the movie, though none of these actors is officially signed up yet.

The Expendables 3 is due to start shooting shortly with up-and-coming Aussie filmmaker Patrick Hughes in the director’s chair. Stallone co-wrote the script with Richard Wenk, who was also his screenwriting partner on last year’s The Expendables 2. Distributors Lionsgate have set a release date of August 15, 2014.
