'The Green Legend' will be shown in IMAX theatres and air online August 28, 2015
The sequel to Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning 2000 martial arts epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon will be the first original film to premiere on Netflix.
In partnership with production company TWC, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend will play simultaneously in IMAX theatres and via the online video streaming service on August 28, 2015.
Variety reports TWC co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein said in a statement: “The moviegoing experience is evolving quickly and profoundly, and Netflix is unquestionably at the forefront of that movement. We are tremendously excited to be continuing our great relationship with Netflix and bringing to fans all over the world the latest chapter in this amazing and intriguing story.”
Netflix chief content officer Ted Srandos added: “Fans will have unprecedented choice in how they enjoy an amazing and memorable film that combines intense action and incredible beauty. We are honored to be working with Harvey Weinstein and a world-class team of creators to bring this epic story to people all over the world and to partner with IMAX, a brand that represents the highest quality of immersive entertainment, in the distribution of this film.”
Echoing the mystical themes of the original film The Green Legend will tell a story of “lost love, young love, a legendary sword and one last opportunity at redemption, set against breathtaking action in an epic martial arts battle between good and evil that will decide the fate of the Martial World”.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend is based on the novel Iron Knight, Silver Vase by Wang Dulu and directed by renowned martial arts choreographer Yuen Wo-Ping (The Matrix Trilogy, Kill Bill).
Michelle Yeoh returns to reprise her role as Yu Shu Lien and is joined by Ip Man star Donnie Yen (pictured) who plays the warrior Silent Wolf.
The film is currently shooting in New Zealand with design work being coordinated by the team behind Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
