Darren Aronofsky reveals why he passed on ‘The Wolverine’

Director also says he was interested in helming 'Superman' reboot

Darren Aronofsky has revealed why he decided not direct the The Wolverine.

The Black Swan filmmaker had been set to helm the X-Men spin-off film back in 2011, but later pulled out of the project. Speaking to MTV about his decision, he revealed that he had been midway through a divorce and felt unable to commit to the film’s schedule.

“I loved the script and I thought the film came out great. I just had… it was a hard time in my life,” he said. “It was complicated. I couldn’t leave New York for that long an amount of time. And, to be honest, the possibility of Noah had started to emerge, and here was something I’d been thinking about for years. I was really excited by that.”

Aronofsky also said he would have been interested in directing Batman Vs Superman, the forthcoming sequel to Man Of Steel, but insisted that Zack Snyder was a fine alternative. “Superman’s one of the holy grails. It’s Superma,” he said. “It’s the best superhero. Batman is great, of course, but it’s Superman. He’s the same level. That possibility was great.”

“I thought Zack was a great choice and I loved his Watchmen movie,” he added. “I thought it was great. I thought that as a fan of the comic, you couldn’t hope for a better interpretation. I liked the orthodoxy of it.”

James Mangold was chosen as Aronofsky’s replacement on Wolverine and is also reportedly set to direct the sequel, too, which will be released in 2017. Aronofsky’s Noah, meanwhile, opened in cinemas last week. The film, an epic, large-scale retelling of the classic Biblical tale, stars Russell Crowe and Emma Watson – click below to watch a trailer.
