Deadpool sequel gets official go-ahead

Ryan Reynolds will return as 'the merc with the mouth', Fox confirms

Ryan Reynolds will officially reprise his role as the potty-mouthed antihero Deadpool in a forthcoming sequel, 20th Century Fox has confirmed.

‘Deadpool’ has been the surprise hit of the year so far, taking nearly $755m (£533m) at the box office around the world, on a comparatively tiny budget of just $58m ($41m).

Film company Fox has also confirmed that the first film’s director, Tim Miller, will also be on board for the sequel – a major vote of confidence for a former visual effects supervisor who’d never helmed a film before.

The film won plaudits from critics and audiences alike as it gleefully shredded convention with its R-rated take on superhero movie tropes and goofy, fourth-wall breaking attitude to on-screen violence.

It also co-starred Morena Baccarin, TJ Miller and Ed Skrein, and was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. There’s no word yet as to whether any of these will return.

A little is known about Reynolds’, who is very much the driving force behind Deadpool’s return to the big screen, plans for the sequel, at least according to the first film’s post-credits kicker. Deadpool promised that the popular X-Men character Cable would appear, a fact that the writers themselves appeared to confirm in an interview with Hitfix.

“There’s a lot of fun in that he’s very serious and he does take on more serious weighty issues than Deadpool’s used to taking on, so I think there’s a juxtaposition there that can be fun,” said Reese. “We had a lot of fun with Colossus in the first movie, just by virtue of him being a foil to Deadpool, being a goody two-shoes and a straight shooter and Deadpool being irreverent. And I think Cable offers us the opportunity to provide another really cool, different foil for Deadpool.”
