Johnson is currently shooting the movie, Hercules: The Thracian Wars, in Budapest, Hungary. The film is based on a popular graphic novel of the same name and is aiming to offer a more realistic view of the Greek hero. Instead of being portrayed as the son of Zeus, Johnson’s Hercules will be a mighty mortal in charge of a team of mercenaries.
Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, X Men: The Last Stand) is directing from a script by rookie screenwriter Ryan Condal and Paramount have set a release date of August 8, 2014. The film’s cast also includes a trio of well-respected British thesps: John Hurt, Ian McShane and Joseph Fiennes.
Meanwhile, a rival movie called Hercules 3D starring Twilight beefcake Kellan Lutz has just finished filming in Sofia, Bulgaria. It’s set for release in March 2014 – around six months before Johnson’s film.
