The year's strangest trailer has arrived
The first trailer for Pokémon: Detective Pikachu has been revealed – and fans have mixed reactions about the forthcoming live action movie.
As shown in the new trailer the film takes a realistic approach to the famous video game universe, with Pokémon rendered in high-quality CGI and interacting with humans.
The trailer sees Pikachu team up with lead character Tim Goodman (played by Justice Smith) who is seemingly the only human who can understand what the creature is saying.
Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds voices Pikachu, which has led many to draw comparisons to Reynolds’ iconic superhero role.
“If you think I’m going to spend my hard earned money to watch a movie where Deadpool is playing Pikachu who is suddenly now a detective then you’re absolutely correct,” said one fan on Twitter.
The level of detail used in the creation of the CGI Pokémon has also caused quite a stir, with many commenting on renditions of Mr. Mime, Jigglypuff and Psyduck in the trailer.
And, of course, the ‘Surprised Pikachu’ memes were out in force.
It’s not actually the first time that Pikachu has spoken English. Last year, fans reacted with a mixture of shock and horror when the character spoke during animated movie Pokemon: I Choose You.
Footage posted to Twitter shows fans reacting with disbelief as the words tumble out of Pikachu’s mouth for the first time ever.
“What the fuck!”, one cinema-goer is heard shouting amid audible gasps. “No!”, another shouts.
