Tributes pour in for film director and TV star Penny Marshall who has died aged 75


Film director and actress Penny Marshall has died at the age of 75 from complications of diabetes.

Marshall is known for starring in the US sitcom Laverne & Shirley, which aired from 1976-1983.

Marshall later directed a number of films including Big (1988), staring Tom Hanks, and A League of Their Own (1992).

With Big, Marshall became the first woman to direct a movie that made more than $100 million at the US box office.

People have taken to social media to express their condolences. Many remember Marshall and Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher’s close friendship. Fisher once appeared in an episode of Laverne & Shirley.

The pair were known to host legendary joint birthday parties. A number of A-list celebrities attended them in the past including David Bowie.

Stars from the film and TV industry have posted tributes to Marshall including Bette Midler and Danny DeVito. Mark Walhberg remembers Marshall as “such a wonderful, funny and talented lady.”

Marshall died at her home in Hollywood Hills, California yesterday (December 17), her publicist told Reuters news agency in a phone interview.
