The 3D computer-animated movie from Disney Pixar is a prequel to 2001’s Monsters, Inc. It’s set around 10 years earlier and follows Billy Crystal‘s Mike Wazowski as he heads to college and forges a potentially ruinous rivalry with John Goodman‘s Sulley.
Crystal and Goodman also leant their voices to the 2001 movie, which grossed a massive $562 million (£364 million) worldwide. Steve Buscemi, Frank Oz and Charlie Day have all reprised their roles from Monsters, Inc too.
Meanwhile, new additions to the voice cast include Helen Mirren, John Krasinski and Parks And Recreation star Aubrey Plaza. Randy Newman, who provided the music for Monsters, Inc, returned to compose the score and the soundtrack also features a new club banger called ‘Roar’ written especially for the film by Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso of Swedish House Mafia.
Monsters University opens in UK cinemas on July 12 and screenings will be preceded by a six-minute computer-animated short film called The Blue Umbrella.
