Is it a thumbs up for Carol Danvers?
The first reactions to Captain Marvel have emerged on social media, and it looks like the MCU is in line for another superhero hit.
The movie debuted yesterday to US critics, who praised the heavy nostalgia of the film’s ’90s setting and the constant humour throughout the film.
There was also praise for Brie Larson in the title role, who reportedly “makes a fantastic first step into the MCU.”
“Captain Marvel is a blast! Has some cool surprises that I definitely didn’t see coming, and the mystery/origin it weaves is engaging and fun. Brie Larson is awesome, and makes a fantastic first step into the MCU,” wrote CinemaBlend’s Eric Eisenberg on Twitter.
Praising the film’s retro setting, Jim Vejvoda wrote: “#CaptainMarvel was a lot of fun! Just enough ‘90s nostalgia without overdoing it. Brie Larson is great. Ditto Sam Jackson & Ben Mendelsohn. Goose the cat is purr-fect. Some nice surprises and clever decisions throughout. Cool sci-fi elements. And funny! Thumbs up!”
It comes after the film debuted its first trailer last year – which came complete with strong ’90s vibes, Nick Fury and an unexpected moment that saw a grandmother receive a boot to the face (not as weird in context, honestly).
An official synopsis teases: “The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
Captain Marvel is released on 8 March.
