Bill Nighy, Catherine Zeta-Jones and 'The Inbetweeners'' Blake Harrison lead the cast
The first trailer for next year’s Dad’s Army movie has been released.
Toby Jones takes over the role of Captain Mainwaring from the late Arthur Lowe, with Bill Nighy co-starring as Wilson and The Inbetweeners‘ Blake Harrison playing the hapless Pike.
The film’s ensemble cast also includes Michael Gambon as Godfrey, Tom Courtenay as Corporal Jones, Danny Mays as Walker and Catherine Zeta-Jones as a new character called Rose Winter. Mark Gatiss, Alison Steadman, Annette Crosbie and The Inbetweeners‘ Emily Atack all appear in supporting roles too.
Oliver Parker (St Trinian’s, Dorian Gray) directs from a script by Hamish McColl (Mr Bean’s Holiday, Paddington) based on the classic sitcom by Jimmy Perry and David Croft which ran for 80 episodes from 1968 to 1977. A previous Dad’s Army movie featuring the show’s original cast was released in 1971.
The new film’s plot synopsis teases: “It is 1944 and World War II is reaching its climax. The Allies are poised to invade France and finally defeat the German army. But in Walmington-on-Sea morale amongst the Home Guard is low. Their new mission then – to patrol the Dover army base – is a great chance to revive spirits and reputation, that is until glamorous journalist Rose Winters arrives to write about their exploits, setting the pulses racing and putting the local women on red alert.
“MI5 then discover a radio signal sent direct to Berlin from Walmington-on-Sea. There’s a spy on the loose! The outcome of the war is suddenly at stake, and it falls to our unlikely heroes to stand up and be counted.”
Dad’s Army opens in UK cinemas on February 5, 2016. Watch the trailer below.
