Doppelgänger comedy is Ayoade's second film as writer-director following 2010's 'Submarine'
The first trailer for The Double – Richard Ayoade from The IT Crowd‘s second film as writer-director – has been released. Watch it below.
The Double is a dark comedy based on a novella of the same name by Fyodor Dostoyevsky about a man who goes mad after finding out his life has been stolen by a doppelgänger. Jesse Eisenberg stars as the man and his double, flanked by a supporting cast that includes Mia Wasikowska, Wallace Shawn, Sally Hawkins, Noah Taylor and Yasmin Paige.
Hawkins, Taylor and Paige also appeared in Ayoade’s first film as writer-director, a well-received adaptation of Joe Dunthorne’s coming-of-age novel Submarine that came out in 2010 and earned Ayoade a BAFTA nomination for outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer.
Ayoade shot The Double in London last summer (2012). The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday (September 7) and has yet to be given an official release date, though a 2014 opening is thought likely.
In the meantime, Ayoade will reprise his role as computer geek Maurice Moss in the The IT Crowd‘s special one-off finale episode, which creator Graham Linehan has promised will air on Channel 4 later this month (2014).
