Evangeline Lily joins returning cast of Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen for next instalment
The first trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug has arrived – you can watch the full clip by scrolling down and clicking ‘play’.
The promo sees the introduction of new characters in director Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, including Lost actress Evangeline Lily‘s elf warrior Tauriel – an original creation who did not feature in Tolkien’s novel – Lee Pace’s Elvenking Thrandui, Mikael Persbrandt’s Beorn, Luke Evans’ Bard The Bowman, and Orlando Bloom reprises his role as Legolas from the Lord Of The Rings triology.
There is also a quick glimpse of the dragon Smaug at the end of the action-packed clip, but sadly we don’t hear the beast voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch quite yet. Martin Freeman returns as Bilbo Baggins, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, and Richard Armitage as dwarf leader Thorin.
The story follows on from where The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey left off, as Bilbo Baggins, the dwarves and Gandalf trek across Middle Earth on a journey to the Lonely Mountain, where they hope to reclaim the dwarves homeland from an unwelcome squatter, the dragon Smaug.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was released in December last year and took over $1 billion (£670 million) at the box office worldwide. The Desolation Of Smaug will follow on December 13 later this year, before the trilogy concludes with There And Back Again in December 2014.
Jackson originally planned to adapt JRR Tolkien’s classic novel over two movies, before announcing last July (2012) that the story would be extended to a trilogy. The film’s star Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins and boast a bumper ensemble cast including Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Benedict Cumberbatch, Andy Serkis and Cate Blanchett.
