‘Fleabag’ creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge asked to liven up ‘Bond 25’ script

This would make her only the second ever female writer to work on the movie franchise.

Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge has been asked to liven up the script for upcoming James Bond movie, Bond 25, sources close to the movie claim.

Back in 2016, Waller-Bridge became an overnight sensation thanks to her play-turned-hit-TV-show Fleabag. Often compared to Lena Dunham, she created unlikeable characters you couldn’t stop watching. And it now looks like she’s on her way to Pinewood Studios at the request of 007 himself, actor Daniel Craig.

Waller-Bridge has been in New York for a few weeks performing in a stage version of Fleabag, and whilst in the city she reportedly met up with Craig, who lives in New York with his wife Rachel Weisz, to discuss the next instalment of the James Bond movie franchise, currently still known as Bond 25, but also rumoured to be titled Eclipse.

Craig, who is said to be a fan of Fleabag, asked Waller-Bridge if she could help improve the movie’s script by adding her wit and quirkiness to the screenplay, according to sources close to the film in the US. The 007 actor is said to feel like the script is in need of some “polishing”, and wants to introduce more humour and offbeat writing to the project, something that Waller-Bridge is best known for.

Daniel Craig wants to introduce more humour and offbeat writing to ‘Bond 25’.

If the news is true, this would make Waller-Bridge only the second ever female writer to work on the movie franchise. Before her there was Irish-born Johanna Harwood, who had been secretary to Harry Saltzman, the first Bond producer along with Albert Broccoli (current Bond producer Barbara’s late father). Saltzman then asked Harwood to help with the Dr No screenplay, and then again for From Russia With Love.

Bond 25’s release date was recently pushed back by two months and is now expected to arrive April 8th 2020.

The news was confirmed by the James Bond franchise’s official Twitter account, with a tweet that read: “The release date for Bond 25 has changed. Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli: “We are absolutely thrilled to be releasing Bond 25 on 8 April 2020.”

Bond 25 has been swimming in turmoil ever since it was announced four years ago. Whether it was Craig saying he would rather slash his wrists than play the spy again before returning to the role, Sam Mendes refusing to direct anymore Bond films, or Danny Boyle joining the project and then leaving citing “creative differences,” things haven’t started well for the movie.

Said to be based on the novel Never Dream of Dying by the US author Raymond Benson, which featured Bond as a spy, pre-production work has begun on locations in Italy, Norway and Jamaica, plus Pinewood in the UK.

If Waller-Bridge does join the Bond 25 team, she will join writing duo Neil Purvis and Robert Wade, who have penned several previous Bond movies, as well as Scott Z Burns, best known for his screenplay for The Bourne Ultimatum.

Speculation as to who would take over the role should Craig exit has been building steadily – with Idris Elba, Tom Hiddleston, Richard Madden and Tom Hardy all touted as potential replacements.

In January, Idris Elba teased fans speculating over the rumours he could take up the Bond role with a cheeky selfie with Daniel Craig at the Golden Globes. While Bohemian Rhapsody’s Rami Malek has teased he could be the next Bond villain.
