Flight Of The Conchords announce live HBO special, perform new tracks during London show

Good news if you missed out on tickets...

Flight Of The Conchords announced that their current tour will be broadcast as a HBO special during their performance in London last night (July 2).

The New Zealand comedy duo – featuring Jermaine Clement and Bret McKenzie – are currently in the midst of a run of live shows at Hammersmith Apollo. Prior to their residency in the capital, the band stopped off in Leeds, Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester. The tour was initially scheduled to take place in March and April, but was postponed after McKenzie injured his hand falling down the stairs.

During last night’s two-hour show, the duo announced that it was being filmed and will air as a one-hour special on the HBO network.

Earlier in the evening, the group referenced the tour’s cancellation. “Guns N’ Roses are normally 90 minutes late on stage, well we’re 90 days late,” Clement joked. “It’s pretty rock n roll.”

The band were accompanied by a one-man New Zealand symphony orchestra, who played guitar and cello. Tracks from the TV show featured throughout the performance – with McKenzie dedicating ‘Bowie In Space’ to the “late great David Bowie”. ‘Inner City Life’, ‘Hurt Feelings’ and ‘Robots’ were also aired.

Fans were also surprised by a sprinkling of new tunes. ‘The Ballad of Stana’ references U2’s hit ‘With Or Without You’ and tells the tale of doppelgangers in love in the Wild West, while ‘Shady Rachel’ spoofs Tom Waits. Other new cuts included ‘ The Seagull’, ‘Summer Of 1353’ and the piano ballad ‘Father And Son’.
No release date for the live special has yet been announced.

Earlier this month, Clement and McKenzie spoke about the possibility of a third season. “It’s not like we were tired of each other’s company,” McKenzie said, with Clement adding, “we were tired of working together.”

The original show premiered in 2007, with the second season arriving in 2009. At the end of that year, the duo announced that it would not return for a third instalment.

Flight Of The Conchords will perform again tonight (July 3) and tomorrow (4) at Hammersmith Apollo. The two shows will conclude their UK tour.
