The ‘Babel’ star will take on the role of the masked hero
Gael Garcia Bernal has been cast as Zorro in a forthcoming reboot of the swashbuckling franchise.
Bernal, who has previously appeared The Motorcycle Diaries and the Amanda Seyfried-led romcom Letters to Juliet, will be the first actor to don the Mexican hero’s infamous mask and rapier since Antonio Banderas last took on the role in 2005’s The Legend of Zorro.
Banderas also starred in 1998’s The Mask of Zorro, together with Anthony Hopkins.
The latest film, titled Z, will be directed by Gravity screenwriter Jonas Cuaron, son of filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron.
Speaking of Bernal’s casting, producer Mark Amin told Deadline: “I have always loved Gael for this role. Zorro is a hero who is charming, witty and clever. Gael possesses all those characteristic and he’s able to deliver them with a modern spin to introduce the Zorro character to a new audience.”
According to reports, Z will be a futuristic re-imagining of the character that draws inspiration from Christopher Nolan’s Batman reboot Dark Knight. The film was originally titled Zorro Reborn when it was announced last year.
Bernal recently won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in his role in the Amazon series Mozart In The Jungle.
