‘Girls’ actress to play Patti Smith in new biopic

Zosia Mamet will portray Smith with Matt Smith to take lead role in Robert Mapplethorpe film

Former Doctor Who actor Matt Smith is set to star in a film about Patti Smith‘s ex-boyfriend and collaborator Robert Mapplethorpe, with Zosia Mamet to play Smith.

Mapplethorpe, who passed away in 1989, was the photographer who shot Smith’s famous ‘Horses’ front cover. He also inspired Smith’s best-selling 2013 memoir Just Kids.

A new biopic, titled Mapplethorpe, is currently in the works, with production set to begin this summer. Deadline reports that Ondi Timoner will direct.

Matt Smith, who played the Doctor in Doctor Who from 2010–14, will play Mapplethorpe. It has also been reported that Zosia Mamet, best known for playing the part of Shoshanna in hit US sitcom Girls, will portray singer Patti Smith.

The news follows that of Patti Smith working on turning her Just Kids memoir into a TV series.

Last year saw Smith publish her literary follow-up to Just Kids in the form of M Train.
