Greta Gerwig’s ‘Lady Bird’ is no longer the best reviewed movie of all-time

It's tenure at the top was brief

Greta Gerwig‘s acclaimed movie Lady Bird is no longer the best reviewed movie of all time on Rotten Tomatoes.

Earlier this month, the film bested Toy Story 2 on the reviews aggregation site, which held the honour of being the most reviewed movie to attain a 100 percent score from critics.

Responding to the achievement at the time, director Gerwig described it as “amazing”. “It’s so exciting,” she added. “You make a movie and you put so much into it… To have it reflected back to you, it’s an amazing thing.”

Now, however, Toy Story 2 has clawed the title back after Lady Bird received its first negative review, as Digital Spy reports. Film critic Cole Smithey called the Saoirse Ronan-starring coming-of-age movie as a “far from perfect film”.

He added it was “not the mumblecore disaster you’d expect from Greta Gerwig – one of the mumblecore movement’s prime progenitors” and “there are dozens of coming-of-age films that far outweigh this lightweight contender.”

The review has now caused Lady Bird‘s perfect score to fall to 99 percent, lifting Toy Story 2 back to the top of the pile.

Lady Bird was released in the US last month (November 3), but will not arrive in cinemas in the UK until February 16.
