The trailer sparked criticism on Twitter, with users writing they thought the movie was a joke. ‘Oh my god what I thought ‘Brexit starring Benedict Cumberbatch for HBO’ was a joke it’s REAL???,’ one user tweeted.
‘Oh god, I genuinely thought you were all joking about Brexit, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, but it turns out it’s real?!’ another added. ‘Dear HBO – it’s a bit irresponsible to release a disaster movie when we’re still in the middle of the disaster. Regards, The U.K. #BrexitHBO,’ another user tweeted.
However, film critic Donald Clarke defended the film, tweeting: “Ah, this again. Yes, it really does matter that you’re denouncing that HBO Brexit film without having actually seen it. (If that’s what you’re doing.)”

Last week, Andy Serkis revived Gollum in unsettling spoof of Theresa May’s Brexit deal. In the new sketch, titled ‘LEAKED: Footage From Inside No. 10 Downing Street!’, the motion-capture actor is seen portraying an unnerving Gollum/May hybrid – who is looking over her copy of the “precious” Brexit agreement deal.
Serkis utilises the character’s split personality to weigh up the pros and cons of leaving the EU.
“We take back control – money, borders, laws…blue passports!” the Gollum version of May says in the clip. The PM’s inner Smeagol replies: “No, it hurts the people – makes them poorer.”
