Here’s why ‘Suicide Squad 2’ has been delayed

Filming has been pushed back to 2019

Suicide Squad 2 has been delayed in favour of Harley Quinn spin-off Birds Of Prey.

The sequel to the 2016 DC movie was due to start filming in March 2018, but had already been pushed back to October.

Now, Variety report work on the movie won’t commence until 2019, meaning the earliest it is likely to be in cinemas is 2020. Instead, Birds Of Prey looks to be being prioritised.

Reports suggest Warner Bros want to establish a host of new characters in the new team-up movie, including Batgirl, before giving them their own spin-offs. Margot Robbie will return as Harley Quinn in the film, while the script has been written by Christina Hodson. It will be directed by Cathy Yan.

No other cast members have been confirmed at present, but filming is expected to start later this year.

Meanwhile, The Accountant director Gavin O’Connor has been brought in to helm Suicide Squad 2. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is also rumoured to appear in the sequel. Jared Leto could return as The Joker, but previously said he was unsure if he would or not. “It’s a big universe and when you play the Joker, there’s no ownership there,” he said last year.

Leto has also said he hasn’t seen Suicide Squad, despite starring in it. “I just think with watching your own films, it can be too self-conscious of a process,” he said. “You either like what you did and you’re prone to repeat it, or you didn’t like it, and it can make you self-conscious. I’m not sure how much win there is for me. But I read the scripts, so I know what’s going to happen.”
