A new trailer for forthcoming Sherlock Holmes film Mr Holmes has been released.
Based on Mitch Cullins’ 2005 novel A Slight Trick Of The Mind, the film stars Ian McKellen as a more mature version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective, who is now 93 years old and struggling to enjoy his retirement.
“In 1947, the world famous sleuth has retired to a remote Sussex farmhouse, living in relative anonymity with only his housekeeper Mrs Munro and her young son Roger for company. Cantankerous, demanding and frustrated with the mis-representation of him in Watson’s best-selling novels, he diverts his attention to an unsolved case. As the mystery deepens, Sherlock tries desperately to recall the events of 30 years ago that ultimately led to his retirement,” reads the film’s plot synopsis.
Laura Linney co-stars as housekeeper Mrs Munro, while newcomer Milo Parker plays 10-year-old Roger. The film’s supporting cast also includes Frances de la Tour, Phil Davis and Roger Allam.
Bill Condon, who previously worked with McKellen on 1998’s Gods And Monsters, directed from a script he co-wrote with Stage Beauty writer Jeffrey Hatcher. Mr Holmes opens in UK cinemas on June 19 before getting a US release on July 17.
