They'll be joined by Jeff Goldblum, who's reprising his role from the first film
Liam Hemsworth and rising star Jessie Usher have landed lead roles in Independence Day 2.
Usher, 23, best known for his role in US basketball drama series Survivor’s Remorse, will play the son of Will Smith’s character from the first film, Captain Steven Hiller, THR reports. Smith is not returning for the sequel.
Hemsworth’s character is currently unknown. He and Usher will be joined in Independence Day 2 by Jeff Goldblum, who will reprise his role as satellite technician David Levinson from the first film.
20th Century Fox gave the sequel a green light back in November. Independence Day 2 is set for release on June 24, 2016 – just in time for the 20th anniversary of the original starring Smith, Goldbum and Bill Pullman which followed a last-ditch effort to thwart an alien invasion taking place on July 4; the day of America’s annual Independence Day holiday.
Director Roland Emmerich is returning to shoot the sequel to his 1996 blockbuster. Dean Devlin, who co-penned the original’s screenplay with Emmerich, has also been involved in the writing process second time around.
Independence Day 2 has been in the works for some time, with Emmerich and Devlin first trying to devise a storyline around a decade ago. Back in 2012, Emmerich spoke about the possibility of making a pair of Independence Day sequels, but at present, 20th Century Fox has only given a green light to one new film.
