Avatar will be released on Blu-ray 3D this October (2012), James Cameron has confirmed.
The director made the announcement via a video message on the film’s Facebook page – scroll down to watch it. He said: “I’m pretty excited to let Avatar Facebook fans be the first to know that you will soon be able to revisit Pandora in 3D from the comfort of your own home and Avatar will be released on Blu-ray 3D everywhere around the globe.”
Avatar will be released on Blu-ray 3D on October 15 (2012) in the US and October 16 in (2012) in the UK. The movie was previously only available on Blu-ray 3D to purchasers of Panasonic Blu-ray players after Cameron signed an exclusive deal with the electronics company.
Discussing the impetus for the wider release, producer Jon Landau said in a press release: “As the number of homes with 3D televisions continues to grow, we thought it was important to bring the biggest 3D film ever right into your living room. This is the only way fans should experience the world of Pandora and this release offers the highest picture quality possible.”
Meanwhile, Cameron added in the press release: “3D television is the future of home entertainment. I’m a huge proponent of the technology and very pleased that Avatar can be viewed in the living room the way it is meant to be seen.”
Released in 2009, Avatar became the highest-grossing movie ever with worldwide box office takings of over $2.7 billion (£1.7 billion). Cameron is expected to begin shooting three sequels simultaneously this Autumn (2012).
